THIS JUST MIGHT HAVE MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

What you need to know about a drug called PHENERGAN:

PHENERGAN otherwise known as:

Promethazine HCl (marketed as Phenergan and generic products)

My son Evan was prescribed Phenergan suppositories prior to his stroke for vomiting. The drug did not help his vomiting, instead it made him so tired that he no longer could communicate with me. He could no longer eat or drink or keep his eyes open.

Phenergan "masked" what was really happening to my son. My son was dying and Phenergan was hiding it from us. I wish I had never given it to him!!

He only had 1 dose (1/2 suppository, twice). I followed the doctors orders exactly! His vomiting continued except he became more lethargic and "out of it". His lethargy, fatigue and constant sleeping was blamed on the drug when in fact he should have been in the hospital.

I want every parent to know that if your child is vomiting, please know that there are other medications to help your child. Phenergan is not the way to go!

Phenergan should be given for these reasons:

• "hay fever," or, a stuffy runny nose from allergy

• watery, itchy eyes due to inhaled allergies and foods

• mild allergic skin reactions with itching and swelling

• allergic reactions to blood or plasma

• dermographism, a form of hives known as "skin writing"

• serious allergic reactions along with epinephrine and other treatments

• sedation before or after surgery, or during childbirth

• prevention and control of nausea and vomiting after surgery

• along with meperidine (demerol) or other pain medicines

• sedation, relief of anxiety, and production of light sleep from which the patient can be easily aroused

• treatment and prevention of motion sickness
